Who am I? Why am I here? Why was I created? For what purpose was I created? These are the questions of a searching heart. They are the questions that have been asked by mankind since the beginning of time. Mankind remains desperate to make sense of his world and the world around him. We look to the stars for our purpose. We look to nature for ‘the why’ of our existence, then we worship IT.
We try to satisfy our souls by settling the question with external things. We say I was created to be a——- whatever our vocation is. We say we were created to do —— whatever the task may be. Or we say, were created to fulfill —– whatever the plan may be. If it isn’t a vocation, a position, or a plan for our existence, we turn our focus to each other.
In the Body of Christ, we explore what our spiritual gifts are so we can at least bless others to feel we have meaning and purpose.
We continue our focus on each other with being a good ——, taking care of each other, pleasing each other, or making each other happy. I applaud you, these are very noble causes; there’s something still deeper than that. Finally, if none of the above satisfy our hearts and mind, then we say, “I know Tresca, I was created to serve and please God.” What a wonderful and most sincere statement, yet, it comes short in fulfilling the REAL purpose for our existence and let me show you why.
Jesus woke me up early in April 2017 when I first wrote this blog. He whispered these words in my ears, ‘For Him.’ Those two words set me on a path of discovery in His Word to look for the scriptures that will shed light on the two most powerful words in the universe. ‘For Him,’ can open the prison doors in our minds. These two words can quiet every fear, can set the galaxies of our universe back in order; just these two words, ‘For Him.’ These two words if we will allow them to come into the darkness of our minds, and seep through the crevices of our souls, will change us FOREVER IF WE WILL LET THEM. Come, let me share with you the meaning of these two words. Colossians 1:16 in the Amplified version of the Bible reads:
16 For BY Him (Jesus Christ) ALL THINGS were created in heaven and on earth, [things] visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities; ALL THINGS were created and exist through Him [that is, by His activity] and FOR HIM.
What does that really mean, Tresca? It means exactly what it says. The only reason we were created, the only reason we have breath in our lungs, the only reason we walk upon planet earth is FOR HIM. We were created to be loved, satisfy, and please the heart of Jesus, allowing Him to live His Life through us every second of the day. If I am not sitting at His feet, learning to know His heart, seeking to know what He desires of me each moment of the day, then, I have wasted the whole purpose for my existence; we have believed ‘The Lie.’ ‘The Lie’ handed down from generation to generation from Satan in the Garden of Eden was… life was about US. Life was about getting our needs met our way. To get our needs met, we must: get a good job, make a lot of money, get married, raise children, have nice houses, drive fine cars, then retire, and live the dream. “Was that it?”
A young man came to me for counseling several years ago. He was 27 years old. He had reached the pinnacle of his career; he made six figures on his job, married, had a brand new luxury home in the finest neighborhood and was becoming a workaholic trying to keep up the lifestyle he had built. He said to me with tears in his eyes, “I have all of these things, all my wife and I need now, is a baby.” “But, Tresca, is this it?” My answer to him was, “No its not! But can I tell you why our Father created you?” The man, replied, “No that’s okay, maybe I will start doing volunteer work somewhere in the community to give my life purpose.” With that said, he left my office, still disillusioned, and never returned to counseling. His heart was knocking at the door of eternity asking God, “Who am I? Why am I here? Why do I exist?” And Jesus came to the door to answer his ‘heart’s cry’ but his heart was not open to His answer. I prayed for him when he left my office that day and for the many souls who sat on my couch searching for the answer to their ‘heart’s cry.’ We tell each other the same lies over and over again, even though we are drowning in debt, have built the finest homes, possess every car engineered by man, yet, we still pacify our souls…. living life and having the dream that life is all about US. Here is the weirdest thing, we don’t want to die and go home to heaven to have something even greater and grander! We would rather strive and struggle in this measly form of existence and call it life… why?!
Another scripture came to my heart as I was reading Colossians 1:16; it is found in Revelation 4:9-11 in the King James Version of the Bible:
9 And when those beasts give glory and honor and thanks to him that sat on the throne who live forever and ever,
10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that live forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou has created ALL THINGS, and FOR THY PLEASURE they are and were created.
It is such a tragedy that mankind has made life all about himself when all of creation and heaven are worshipping only ONE… Jesus Christ. The angels know why they were created, the birds know why they were created, the beast of the field know why they were created, but when you ask man, why he was created… he points to himself or doing something for God.
I pray that before we leave planet earth to live with Him forever, we meet heart to heart, and face to face with Him with our whole hearts while we are still on earth. I pray we continue to spend time getting to know Him, the One whose house we will live in throughout eternity!
“FOR HIM AND BY HIM ALL THINGS WERE CREATED”
